NUL-ERC Strengthens Collaboration with FFRC in Finland: Advancing Futures Thinking in Energy Education

From 8th –14th June 2025, five members of the NUL Energy Research Centre (ERC) travelled to Finland for a series of LETSEMA Project coordinated meetings with the Finland Futures Research Centre (FFRC) in Helsinki, followed by the Futures of Technologies Conference in Turku. The visit, led by Prof. Mpholo and Osku Hapassari, was part of the EU-funded Erasmus+ LETSEMA Project and the International Credit Mobility (ICM).

Discussions focused on integrating Futures and Foresight methodologies into the MSc in Sustainable Energy curriculum. The team also explored ways to strengthen collaboration in advancing skills for Lesotho’s energy transition in line with LETSEMA’s objectives.

At the conference, Prof. Jonathan and Mr Yengane presented innovative research on AI and Geospatial Analysis for the Energy-Water-Food Nexus and AI-based Grid Inertia Assessment for Lesotho’s Renewable Power System, earning strong recognition. They were joined by Palesa Nkaile and Moruti Kao, who participated in several futures-focused sessions.

The visit provided valuable insights on how technology and society shape each other, inspiring the team to apply Futures Thinking in teaching, research, and policy. A highlight was the MOOC on Introduction to Futures, conducted by the members of FFRC during the Research Methodologies Course, which prepared ERC staff and students to breadcrumb futures principles in courses such as Solar Photovoltaics, Energy Planning & Policy, and Sustainable Energy Solutions for Communities.

Meanwhile, LETSEMA continues to modernise learning at NUL and BBCDC through high-performance computer labs, upgraded energy laboratories, and an upcoming recording studio. These promote digital, practical, and student-centred learning, reaffirming the project’s commitment to shaping skilled, future-ready and entrepreneurial energy champions.
